A new year and a new review

    • "Not enough stars," said our first guests of 2018, who awarded Bailèn 41 its latest 5-star review: #70 in an unbroken string!
          We are excited to kick off the new year with this new review, especially because it comes from returning guests who first stayed at Bailèn 41 in winter 2016. Here's what they wrote on VRBO about their most recent visit:
        Our stairway hedgehogs also are 5 stars!
        "All of Barcelona at your doorstep! This apartment delivers style and comfort aplenty with the added benefit of being in a perfect location. All of the most wonderful things to see and do are within walking distance and there is a metro stop on the corner for anything farther afield.
        This was our second stay (the first for 3 months in 2016) and we were so happy to be back in our Barcelona home. Especially with the newly re-done bathroom which includes a huge shower, great lighting and lots of storage. The brightest star of this property is your concierge . . . [who] knows everything about the city and can assist with obtaining tickets to events or suggest day trips, if you have time.
        As I said in my last review, come to Barcelona for as long as you can, and when you do, stay here. You won't regret either."
        We love our guests!

Barcelona: Still Beautiful

Many thanks to guests of Bailèn 41 who have contacted us about the horror that took place in Barcelona 17 August.

A particular comforting sentiment from recent guests from Calgary: "We loved your beautiful city and will not be deterred. We will share its beauty and joy with our friends, encourage them to visit and come back again someday."

Jump into Barcelona!

What's on your must-do list of activities during your stay in Barcelona?
  • tour nearby wineries
  • hit the tapas hot spots
  • head to Montserrat to hear the boys choir
  • travel to the Dali Museum
  • go sailing/fishing in the Mediterranean
  • enjoy a concert at the Palau de la Musica Catalana
  • take a walking tour of the Old Town
  • visit the Picasso Museum
Now you can book any of these - plus many more - before you even pack your bags, kick-starting your Barcelona vacation from the moment you arrive.

Thanks to a new partnership with VisitBarcelonaTickets (part of Barcelona Turisme), guests of Bailèn 41 can search for and book tickets on-line for a range of activities: Gaudí & modernism, sea & beaches, concerts & shows, food & wine tourism, sports & nature, culture, and more. Check out the offerings (many with special discounts) and make your selections. And message us if you have any questions.

The best of both worlds

The modern elevator at Bailèn 41 is just perfect for wrangling luggage, groceries, and other bulky or heavy items.

But for just plain simple coming and going, most of our guests prefer to take the marble stairs with the porcupine balustrade and the modernist-patterned walls.

Wouldn't you?

The new bigger, badder bathroom!

We're proud to show off the completely brand-spanking new and considerably expanded bathroom at Bailèn 41!

Our great team of Barcelona bath building professionals relocated (i.e., tore down and then rebuilt) the wall separating the bathroom from the luggage storage room, removed all existing wall and floor tile as well as all the bathroom fixtures and accessories, and reworked the plumbing and electricity.

Notable new features include a double sink set-up with four ample self-closing drawers, a great big walk-in shower with a three-function shower head, plenty of space to move around, new controllable lighting, and an overall fantastic feel. As a recent guest remarked, "The best place in Barcelona just got better!"

We always agree with our guests!

The latest addition to our walking tours: the Plaça del Rei

Right in the heart of Barcelona's old town adjacent to the cathedral is a unique spot that encompasses more than 17 centuries of civilization in Barcelona, from the Romans through the Visigoths to medieval times and the Renaissance! And, of course, it's a nice walk from Bailèn 41, your vacation home in Barcelona.

Check out the details on our latest walking tour to the Plaça del Rei.

Will walk for food!

Where to eat in Barcelona - that's always something on everyone's mind! The official Bailèn 41 guidebook (available in the apartment) offers several suggestions for munching through the surrounding neighborhood, but plenty more great cuisine is available throughout the city.

And thanks to some recent guests from California - who offered to share their culinary experiences, complete with notes and photos - here are some excellent suggestions for eating on the "other" side of l'Eixample. All three restaurants are about a 20-25 minute walk from Bailèn 41, just enough to work up a healthy appetite. (Of course, you can always take a short and inexpensive cab ride.)

We love our guests!

#1. La Palmera, Carrer Enric Granados 57 (tel: 93 453 23 38)

* small charming restaurant; friendly, helpful staff
* excellent tapas tasting menu at a really reasonable price plus an a la carte menu

* features a number of foie gras dishes (looked delicious!)

#2. Mauri / 1929 Barcelona, Rambla de Catalunya 102 (tel: 93 215 10 20)

"Hit the jackpot" with Bailèn 41

Bistro Menil Chef Greg Martin on what to see, do, and eat in Barcelona. His recommendation for where to stay? Barcelona Apartment for Rent, of course!

Where to stay

I think I hit the jackpot renting an apartment in the L’Example Dreta area from a former Texan now residing permanently in Barcelona  https://www.vrbo.com/607999.  The ideally located apartment was spacious and close to the Tetuan metro station even though we walked most of the time.  I would highly recommend her place as it was in an ideal area and the owner could not have been more thoughtful.  She had some much needed provisions upon our arrival and from A to Z, the apartment was very thoughtfully readied for visitor’s needs. . . .After several trips to Europe I know I prefer apartments as I can cook when the mood strikes and you get a better sense of how the locals live.  I like setting up a temporary home, going to local farmer’s markets and cooking breakfast or even dinner when I’m just to tired to go out after a long day of sightseeing. Read the chef's recommendations on where to eat and what to see here.

The Best Sight & Sound Combo in Barcelona

Barcelona's amazing modernista concert hall - Palau de la Música Catalana - is a must-see/must-hear for anyone coming to Barcelona.

Trip Advisor ranks it as #3 of "598 Things to Do in Barcelona", right behind the Sagrada Familia and Casa Batllo and right ahead of the Gothic Quarter.  (And all four of these activities, by the way, are easy walking distance from Bailèn 41.)

Daily guided tours of the building are offered, but if you really want the whole experience, buy a ticket for one of the Palau's world class musical performances and enjoy the amazing combination of sights and sounds. The Palau offers the gamut of musical tastes: classical, contemporary, jazz, gospel, children's programs, flamenco, and more.

The newly announced 2016-2017 program includes such gems as:

  • William Christie directing Les Arts Florissants in Händel's Messiah;
  • Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducting the English Baroque Soloists in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulissee in patria;
  • Pincas Zukerman performing Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms;
  • René Jacobs conducting the Freiburger Barockorchester in Bach's St. Matthew Passion and Mozart's Cosi fan tutte;
  • Gustavo Dudamel conducting all nine Beethoven symphonies in one week;
  • Sir András Schiff and Daniel Barenboim playing piano; and
  • Jordi Savall directing Le Concerts des Nations in Mozart's last 3 symphonies.

Bailèn 41, of course, offers our guests concierge service for Palau and other tickets. We're here to help!
